How I Planned a Treasure Hunt Around the Neighborhood

There are all sorts of ways to plan a treasure hunt, but I like to start from the end – with the treasure!
Choose something fun to hide: it could be chocolate, a tasty snack, a small toy, or any other surprise that will delight the participants. Then decide where to hide it – this will be the end point of the game. For example, I prepared a cooler bag full of popsicles (because it was an especially hot day) and chocolate coins (because the story was about pirates searching for treasure).

Once you have your end point, decide on your starting point (usually you'll begin from home) and then build the route between the points. Try to vary the types of riddles (it's good to include word searches, ciphers, puzzles, and more...) – this makes the game much more surprising and dynamic.

Not required, but it definitely elevates the experience several levels – think of a theme that fits your participants. It could be superheroes, unicorns, fairies, dinosaurs… and if you need more ideas, you can check out these treasure hunt ideas. After you choose a theme, design the treasure and riddles accordingly, and you can even get the participants into the mood through costumes or small props related to the theme. I chose a classic – a pirate-themed treasure hunt – and I highly recommend it!

Also, to get everyone into the pirate world, I gave them bandanas and drew two lines under their eyes with black and red makeup for a more fierce and brave look. Even though it was simple, it really enhanced the experience and made the game feel more real!

Go through the game from start to finish – this way you can make sure everything connects smoothly, that all the clues work as they should, and if needed, you can make small adjustments that will ensure a perfect experience for the players.

Now comes the part where everything comes to life! Hide the treasure in the secret spot you chose (since this is outdoors, sometimes it's good to have someone else hide the treasure when you see the players are nearing the end of the activity, and sometimes you need someone to stay and guard it...) Place the clues and cards at the points you built in the route, and make sure they're hidden but still discoverable. Invite your participants, give them the first clue… and watch the adventure begin!
